‘The power of representations’ was a film cycle about sexual violence that included the screening of a selection of films, conversations with directors and a round table that delved into the multifaceted aspects of this pressing issue and its representations in contemporary cinema.

Starting from a set of films selected from the different sections of the 2023 Festival Caminhos do Cinema Português, this set offered a platform to promote meaningful conversations and careful reflection on the topic. The cycle transcended mere cinematographic entertainment and intended to become a vehicle for education, dialogue and advocacy. Each film approached sexual violence from unique angles. By weaving narratives around the imaginary of sexual violence, the narration of lived experience, the ways of dealing with trauma, the debates about agency vs. force and coercion, these films invited audiences to confront different realities about sexual violence, explore nuances and complexities, power dynamics and consequences of trauma and, ultimately, bring possible contributions to the ethics of representing rape.
